As part of the Excursions Performance Festival, Ania Bas facilitated a language fair, titled "Sell your language" on Bedford Row, in the centre of Limerick.
The event took place on Saturday, 24 January 2009, and two members of IRCBA, Daniela Butan and Gabriela Avram did their best to "sell" 5min Romanian language lessons to the people passing by.
We had all kind of reactions, from "I speak English and I don't need any other language" to "What can you teach me in 5 min?"
But there were quite a few people willing to try, for all kind of reasons: time to spend before meeting someone, impressing the house mate's Romanian boyfriend, and so on. One interesting aspect was that nobody ever thought of making a trip to Romania and they knew no Romanian people in Ireland. We showed and shared a few pictures of the Voronet monastery and spoke about the Martisor tradition.
It was an interesting experience, although in the last part of the afternoon it was freezing cold.
Ania is planning to franchise the language fair idea, so who knows?! maybe we'll have a regular such event in a cafe in the future, if someone would be brave enough to organise it in Limerick!
Here are some more pictures from the event.
